First, Rama's departure to the forest of austerity; the slaying of the golden deer;
the abduction of Vaidehi; the death of Jatayu; the meeting with Sugriva;
the overthrow of Vali; the crossing of the ocean; the burning of the city of Lanka;
and at last the slaying of Ravana and Kumbhakarna: this indeed is the Ramayana.
पहले राम का तपोवन को गमन; स्वर्ण मृग का वध;
वैदेही का हरण; जटायु का मरण; सुग्रीव से भेंट;
बालि का निग्रह; समुद्र का तरण; लंकापुरी का दहन;
और अन्त में रावण-कुम्भकर्ण का वध: यही रामायण है।
आदौ देवकिदेविगर्भजननं गोपीगृहे वर्धनम्
मायापूतनजीवितापहरणं गोवर्धनोद्धारणम्।
कंसच्छेदनकौरवादिहननं कुन्तीसुतापालनम्

First, the birth from the womb of the goddess Devaki; the growing up in the cowherds' home;
the taking of the life of the deceitful Putana; the lifting of Govardhan;
the cutting down of Kamsa and the destruction of the Kauravas; the protection of Kunti's sons:
this is the Bhagavata as the Purana tells it, the nectar of Shri Krishna's play.
पहले देवकी देवी के गर्भ से जन्म; गोपों के घर में लालन-पालन;
मायाविनी पूतना के प्राणों का हरण; गोवर्धन का उद्धार;

First, the birth of the Pandavas and the sons of Dhritarashtra; the burning of the lacquer house;
the loss of fortune at dice; the wandering in the forest; the year hidden in Matsya's court;
the playful recapture of the cattle; the maneuvers of war; the failed labors of peace;
and the crushing of Bhishma, Drona, Duryodhana and the rest: this is the Mahabharata.
पहले पाण्डवों और धृतराष्ट्र-पुत्रों का जन्म; लाक्षागृह का दहन;
द्यूत में लक्ष्मी का हरण; वन में विचरण; मत्स्य देश में अज्ञातवास;
लीलापूर्वक गौओं का उद्धार; युद्ध के दांव-पेंच; सन्धि के विफल प्रयत्न;
और भीष्म, द्रोण, दुर्योधन आदि का मंथन: यही महाभारत है।
Origin & Significance उत्पत्ति एवं महत्व
The ekashloki is one of the most charming traditions of Sanskrit learning: the compression of an entire scripture into a single verse. Pandits composed these one-verse epics both as feats of poetic craft and as acts of devotion, for tradition holds that reciting the ekashloki with attention invokes the merit of remembering the whole work. The three most famous are gathered here: the Ramayana in one verse (exile, the golden deer, the burning of Lanka, the fall of Ravana), the Bhagavata in one verse (the prison birth, the butter-thief childhood, Govardhan, Kamsa), and the Mahabharata in one verse (the lacquer house, the dice game, the exile, the war). Each is recited as a daily remembrance by those who cannot recite the full epics, which is to say, by nearly everyone.
एकश्लोकी संस्कृत विद्या की सबसे मनोहर परम्पराओं में से एक है: सम्पूर्ण ग्रंथ को एक ही श्लोक में समेट देना। पण्डितों ने ये एक-श्लोकी महाकाव्य काव्य-कौशल और भक्ति, दोनों के रूप में रचे, क्योंकि परम्परा मानती है कि ध्यानपूर्वक एकश्लोकी का पाठ करने से सम्पूर्ण ग्रंथ के स्मरण का पुण्य मिलता है। यहां तीन सबसे प्रसिद्ध संकलित हैं: एक श्लोक में रामायण (वनगमन, स्वर्ण मृग, लंका दहन, रावण वध), एक श्लोक में भागवत (कारागार में जन्म, माखनचोर बचपन, गोवर्धन, कंस), और एक श्लोक में महाभारत (लाक्षागृह, द्यूत, वनवास, युद्ध)। जो पूर्ण महाकाव्यों का पाठ नहीं कर सकते, अर्थात लगभग सभी, उनके लिए ये नित्य स्मरण हैं।
