Om, salutations to Shiva. The five syllables Na-Ma-Shi-Va-Ya are held to contain the five elements and the whole of the Vedas in seed form: the simplest of all Shiva mantras, and the most complete.
ॐ, शिव को नमस्कार। न-म-शि-वा-य, इन पांच अक्षरों में पांच तत्व और बीज रूप में समस्त वेद समाए माने जाते हैं: समस्त शिव मंत्रों में सरलतम, और सबसे पूर्ण भी।
ध्यायेन्नित्यं महेशं रजतगिरिनिभं चारुचन्द्रावतंसं रत्नाकल्पोज्ज्वलाङ्गं परशुमृगवराभीतिहस्तं प्रसन्नम्। पद्मासीनं समन्तात् स्तुतममरगणैर्व्याघ्रकृत्तिं वसानं विश्वाद्यं विश्ववन्द्यं निखिलभयहरं पञ्चवक्त्रं त्रिनेत्रम्॥

Meditate always on Mahesha: luminous like a mountain of silver, the lovely crescent moon his crest, his limbs bright as ornaments of jewels, serene, his hands holding the axe and the deer and offering boons and fearlessness; seated in the lotus posture, praised on every side by the hosts of the immortals, clothed in the tiger skin: the first of the universe, adored by the universe, remover of every fear, five-faced and three-eyed.
महेश का नित्य ध्यान करें: रजत पर्वत के समान देदीप्यमान, मस्तक पर सुन्दर चन्द्रमा, रत्नाभूषणों से उज्ज्वल अंग, प्रसन्न मुद्रा, हाथों में परशु और मृग तथा वर और अभय की मुद्राएं; पद्मासन में विराजमान, चारों ओर देवगणों से स्तुत, व्याघ्रचर्म धारण किए: विश्व के आदि, विश्व के वन्दनीय, समस्त भय हरने वाले, पंचमुख, त्रिनेत्र।
कर्पूरगौरं करुणावतारं संसारसारं भुजगेन्द्रहारम्। सदा वसन्तं हृदयारविन्दे भवं भवानीसहितं नमामि॥

White as camphor, compassion itself taken form, the essence of all existence, garlanded with the king of serpents: to Bhava, who dwells forever in the lotus of the heart, together with Bhavani, I bow. This is the verse sung across India at the close of every aarti.
कपूर के समान गौर वर्ण, करुणा के साक्षात् अवतार, संसार के सार, नागराज की माला धारण करने वाले: जो सदा हृदय-कमल में विराजते हैं, उन भव को, भवानी सहित, मैं प्रणाम करता हूं। यही वह श्लोक है जो भारत भर में हर आरती के समापन पर गाया जाता है।
मृत्युञ्जय महादेव त्राहि मां शरणागतम्। जन्ममृत्युजराव्याधिपीडितं कर्मबन्धनैः॥

O Mahadeva, conqueror of death, save me: I have come to your refuge, tormented by birth, death, old age, and disease, and bound fast by the chains of karma. A whole life's prayer in two lines: the honest cry of one who knows their own condition.
हे मृत्युंजय महादेव, मेरी रक्षा करें: मैं आपकी शरण में आया हूं, जन्म, मृत्यु, जरा और व्याधि से पीड़ित, कर्म के बन्धनों में जकड़ा हुआ। दो पंक्तियों में पूरे जीवन की प्रार्थना: अपनी दशा को जानने वाले की सच्ची पुकार।
मृत्युञ्जयाय रुद्राय नीलकण्ठाय शम्भवे। अमृतेशाय शर्वाय महादेवाय ते नमः॥

At dawn I remember the Lord of the gods, who takes away the fear of worldly existence: bearer of the Ganga, rider of the bull, Lord of Ambika, his hands holding the staff and trident and offering boons and fearlessness: the one medicine, without a second, for the disease of samsara.
प्रातःकाल मैं उन देवाधिदेव का स्मरण करता हूं, जो भव का भय हरते हैं: गंगाधर, वृषभवाहन, अम्बिका के स्वामी, जिनके हाथों में खट्वांग और त्रिशूल हैं तथा वर और अभय की मुद्राएं: संसार रूपी रोग की एकमात्र, अद्वितीय औषधि।

A collection of the short Shiva prayers that carry the whole of Shaiva devotion in a few lines each: the ones a devotee actually says every day. The five-syllable Namah Shivaya is held to be the heart of all Shiva mantras. Karpura Gauram is sung across India at the close of every aarti, so widely that many who know it by heart have never seen it written. Mrityunjaya Mahadev is the cry of a person who knows themselves bound by karma and pursued by time, asking the conqueror of death for refuge. The morning remembrance verse comes from the Pratah Smarana tradition, greeting Shiva at dawn as the one medicine for the disease of worldly existence. These are recited daily, and with special devotion on Mondays, through the month of Shravan, and on Mahashivratri.
लघु शिव प्रार्थनाओं का संग्रह जो कुछ ही पंक्तियों में सम्पूर्ण शैव भक्ति समेटे हैं: वे प्रार्थनाएं जो भक्त वास्तव में प्रतिदिन बोलता है। पंचाक्षर "नमः शिवाय" समस्त शिव मंत्रों का हृदय माना जाता है। "कर्पूरगौरं" भारत भर में हर आरती के समापन पर गाया जाता है, इतना व्यापक रूप से कि इसे कंठस्थ रखने वाले अनेक लोगों ने इसे कभी लिखा हुआ नहीं देखा। "मृत्युंजय महादेव" उस व्यक्ति की पुकार है जो स्वयं को कर्म से बंधा और काल से पीड़ित जानकर मृत्यु के विजेता की शरण मांगता है। प्रातः स्मरण श्लोक भोर में शिव का अभिवादन करता है, जो भवरोग की एकमात्र औषधि हैं। इनका पाठ प्रतिदिन होता है, और विशेष श्रद्धा से सोमवार, श्रावण मास और महाशिवरात्रि पर।
